Anthropic Microalgae Bloom

Boredomresearch – Vicky Isley & Paul Smith, UK

Anthropic Microalgae Bloom is one of the two selected projects on Reset: Mar Menor 2019 Open Call and residency for artists.

Boredomresearch will produce a cinematic expression of an anthropic microalgae bloom inspired and informed by the Mar Menor – bringing together scientific modeling, real-time 3D animation and poetic imagineering to tell the story of an environment under stress. By creating a cinematic expression of conflict and crisis at the microscopic level Boredomresearch will provide the opportunity to experience the underlying mechanics of Mar Menor’s ecosystem. In doing so they engage audiences with narratives revealed by science, helping foster a sensitivity for fragility in nature.

The working methodology of Boredomresearch embeds them in the science to gain a detailed understanding of biomechanics. In the context of the Mar Menor this will allow them to communicate the intricate beauty of microbiological ecosystems underpinned by current research in computational biology, cellular and molecular biology and psychology, including expert insights from scientific advisors working with: biological responses to stress, evolutionary biology, complex disease processes and biodiversity (please reference scientific advisors below which would contribute to this project).
